Horizon Europe
The European Commission's research and innovation Horizon Europe programme funds the Apollo 2028 project. Learn more about this programme on this page.
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s flagship funding programme for research and innovation, running from 2021 to 2027 with a total budget of €95.5 billion. Designed to address pressing global challenges and bolster Europe’s competitiveness, the programme facilitates collaboration among researchers, businesses, and public authorities.
Horizon Europe is structured around three main pillars:
- Pillar 1: Excellent Science: This pillar aims to strengthen the EU's scientific and technological base by funding frontier research and fostering excellence in research institutions. It supports initiatives such as the European Research Council (ERC) and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), which encourage mobility and career development for researchers.
- Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness: This pillar focuses on tackling societal challenges, such as health, climate change, energy transition, and digital transformation. By promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, it seeks to develop innovative solutions that can enhance the EU's industrial competitiveness while addressing key issues facing society.
- Pillar 3: Innovative Europe: This pillar aims to stimulate the development of breakthrough innovations and support the growth of innovative startups and SMEs. It includes the European Innovation Council (EIC), which provides funding and support for high-risk, high-reward projects.
In addition to these pillars, Horizon Europe places a strong emphasis on inclusivity and engagement, ensuring that research and innovation benefit society at large. It encourages participation from diverse stakeholders, including academia, industry, civil society, and public authorities.
Horizon Europe also aims to enhance the EU’s global position in research and innovation, fostering international collaboration and aligning with global research agendas. By investing in research and innovation, the programme aspires to create a sustainable and resilient future for Europe.
